Washing clothes in the Yamuna River

Pilgrims wash their clothes in the river during their visit to Yamunotri. This is an act of spiritual as well as physical hygine. By immersing one's clothes in the river, one surrounds oneself with the presence of the goddess Yamuna. In this way the religious value of the pilgrimage lingers on after the pilgrim has returned.
