  1. Transtraditional Spirituality. ( "Priest/Minister as Spiritual Friend" and "Transtraditional Spirituality" ) A pluralistic age invites us to reach beyond particular spiritual histories to learn from other wisdom traditions in beneficial ways. The referenced articles discuss why transtraditional spirituality is particularly important, especially in its contemplative aspects, for the 21st century.
  2. Ecological Spirituality. ("The Ecological Challenge to Christianity" ; and "The Ten Commandments of Ecological Spirituality," ) The new environmental awareness of the present impels us  to rethink spirituality and religiousness in terms of our place in and responsibility to the earth communities. What are the challenges and implications of the new nature mysticism?
  3. Spirituality of Elderhood. ( "Living with Elder Wisdom," and three titles of my books on aging listed below) Graying  populations   in many countries today are increasing; the "baby-boomer" cohort in America exemplifies this. Already in mid-life, these new groups are calling for creative ways of assessing later life. How do individuals, couples and  communities craft creative approaches for those growing older? A new shape of "elderhood", both inward and   outward, is under construction.
  4. Reform Issues in the Catholic Church. ( "A Spirituality of Democracy" and "Where Have All the Young Men Gone?"; see also books listed below and other items in the curriculum vitae) For over three  decades, Prof. Bianchi has been involved as a teacher, author and sometimes activist in reform movements of the Roman Catholic Church. His most recent research (with co-principal investigator, Dr. Peter McDonough of   Arizona State University) has been a six year study of American Jesuits and former Jesuits. Their book manuscript,  "Passionate Uncertainty: The Transformation of the Jesuits," is being considered by publishers for a 2001 appearance. The work explores many aspects of a wider leadership crisis in Catholicism today.
  5. "The Bishop of San Francisco," a novel. (Link to the first four chapters of the novel) With the assistance of James Hickey, this reworked novel depicts the exploits of a fifty-year-old archbishop, Mark Doyle, caught in the drama of church reform, an intense romance and the puzzling murders of two of his priests.
